5 Web Design Trends Every Business Owner Should Know

You have approximately three seconds to capture the attention of an average web user. The internet is constantly evolving, and your website needs to be current to keep users engaged. I am going to show you five essential web design elements that can be implemented easily to keep your site relevant and engaging. The changes we are going to discuss will literally wake your site up! These five design elements can take your site from bland and ordinary to rich and engaging. Before continuing, open up a new tab in your browser. Navigate to your site, and ask yourself if it "wows" you. If it is showing its age and is in need of a facelift, now is the best time to implement these changes, and wow your audience.

Responsive Web Design

While the laptop or desktop computer still has some life left, mobile devices are on the rise. In fact, in 2015 it is estimated more users will access the internet through a mobile device. Websites must be accessible for all users regardless of device, otherwise they simply will not return. With that in mind, it is imperative that you incorporate a responsive design into your site. Responsive designs ensure that the end user is receiving the best experience by detecting the type of device they are accessing the site on.

Richer Backgrounds

Earlier, I suggested opening up your website... did you do it? Take a look at the background you are using. Is it a plain white or black background with opposite color text? Maybe you have incorporated a beautiful image, but there is much more that can be done with new elements in web design. For example, with advances in HTML video, a full-screen video can be embedded in as a background. Think of the endless possibilities to attract your customers to your site with the use of a fast loading background video.

Full-Screen Sites

One of the most popular web design elements has been the use of using the full-screen effect. These effects are a part of the responsive designs we talked about earlier. Enabling sites to use beautiful full-screen photographs and videos helps tell a vivid story. Many of the larger sites have already begun to use this technique with much success.

Single-Scroll Sites

One of the most criticized new web design elements by search engine optimization experts are one page scrolling sites. These sites take away the worry of having to create multiple navigation menus and categories. It is uncertain how this type of design will effect search engine rankings. However, they are becoming very popular and seem to be more than just a fad.

The Importance of Speed

Speed is an essential factor that must be kept in mind with the design of a site. Websites must load fast, not only for the benefit of the user, but the search engines as well. Half of web users expect a site to load in two seconds or less. If it takes any longer than three seconds, they hit the dreaded back button and go elsewhere. When having a site designed or redesigned, make it clear that it must be fast loading, which can be accomplished by incorporating good CSS and JavaScript code.

The future of website design is only looking brighter, with many new advances on the horizon. In fact, the envelope is going to keep getting pushed further.  It will be quite interesting to watch it grow and develop past an awkward adolescence into a well-established adult.  What design changes are you most interested to see happen?
