Create Your Narrative: Brand Storytelling in Marketing

Create Your Narrative: Brand Storytelling in Marketing

Blog image 2

Did you know that over 60% of customers favor companies producing original, brand-specific content?  The core to developing such content is brand storytelling. Branding invites you to tell your story your way. How do you want customers to perceive your brand?

Storytelling marketing can increase brand loyalty and help you build lasting relationships with your customers. Continue reading to learn more.

Develop Your Brand

Whether you are just establishing your company or are looking to rejuvenate your brand, the first step to effective storytelling is developing your brand.

  • What makes your company stand out?
  • What values or principles guide your company?
  • What are your company's character and personality?

These are all valid questions to consider as you craft your branding.

As you develop your brand, remember to embrace and not rush the process. As you work on your branding, your chief goal is to create a story that potential customers can appreciate and identify with.

The Magic of Brand Storytelling

There are multiple approaches to effective brand storytelling. Some companies may have a distinct inspiration that led to their founding.

Take, for example, the non-profit food company Newman's Own. Famed entertainer Paul Newman co-founded the brand in 1982 as a means to support charities around the world. Newman's Own's emphasis on charity is critical to its brand storytelling.

Other companies may use creative storytelling to attract their target audiences. One of the best-known examples of this is McDonald's classic advertisements of the 1960s and 1970s.

The commercials and products of their era were colorful, energetic, and memorable. Ronald McDonald and his friends (Grimus, Mayor McCheese, etc.) are shown inviting children to a fantasy paradise where animals and trees are anthropomorphized. Furthermore, these characters encourage children to enjoy delicious McDonald's staples such as the Big Mac.

Akin to television shows of the period like H.R. Pufnstuf, the commercials knew how to engage and entertain children. In turn, McDonald's became a favorite restaurant for children and forced parents to take their children to locations around the country.

The key to successful brand storytelling, as shown by both of the above examples, is to connect with your customers in a meaningful way.

Craft Your Story Today

Brand storytelling is an art form, but can be one of the most enjoyable aspects of marketing. Storytelling allows you to emphasize your brand identity and use it to your company's advantage.

It is beneficial to collaborate with your marketing team and brainstorm ideas on how best to tell the story you want your audience to hear. From marketing materials (brochures, pamphlets, etc.) to your website and social media, there are many avenues to explore.
